Health Projection
the morning the mirror got specific
The complaint
"My hair is thinning and every test comes back normal."
You are not imagining it. More comes out in the brush, and the part looks wider in a hard light. Then the panel comes back normal, and the appointment ends before the question does.
Here is the part the panel does not say out loud. A standard blood count can read normal while the iron you have in storage runs low. Ferritin is the number that tracks the store, and it is not always on the basic panel.
The body spends iron in an order. It protects the blood first, because the blood carries oxygen and cannot wait. Hair is further down that list. So the store can empty while the blood still looks fine, and the hair thins first, as an early sign rather than a late one.
Words to carry
"My hair is shedding. Could we check ferritin, not only the standard count, and talk about what a low store would mean?"
For many women the years around menopause change how iron moves, which is worth naming when it is the mechanism. It is not the mechanism for everyone, so it stays a branch, not the frame.
None of this is an instruction to start a supplement. It is a question worth asking, and a number worth seeing, so the decision is made with your clinician rather than around them.
Where this comes from
Named in plain prose at the foot of every edition. Ferritin and iron-store physiology as described in standard haematology references, with the caveat that reference ranges vary by laboratory and that emerging work on optimal stores for hair is marked as emerging.
